How To Create A Cozy Home
Now that the Holidays have passed and the decorations are put away, it’s easy to feel a bit down. All the fun is over and it’s back to business, albeit with tighter pants. The days are getting longer, inching towards spring, but according to Punxsutawney Phil we’re in for a few more weeks of winter. I’ve always gravitated towards warm and welcoming spaces any time of year and cozying up helps me enjoy these last weeks before spring arrives. These are some of my favorite ways to achieve that vibe in my own home.
Everything in its place
A decluttered home is the best start to creating a thoughtful, lived-in, cozy home. I’ve been known to throw things in a laundry basket then hide it in the closet so I could focus on a task but I’m talking real organization. Going through your things, getting rid of what you don’t need, then finding storage solutions and systems to contain what’s left. There’s something about the new year that makes us crave a fresh start so get a jump on that spring cleaning.
Warm, neutral wall colors
Have you ever noticed how the world’s best hotels and spas have warm neutral wall colors? And don’t you feel incredibly relaxed in those spaces? Warm whites, greige and even a mushroom tone help set the tone for an inviting space. Greys are usually thought of as being cool so if you’ve got your heart set on gray be sure to choose one with yellow and brown undertones rather than blue.
Lighting
Sunlight is good for the soul so open the blinds and let all the natural light in. In the evenings I prefer to use dimmers for overhead lights and turn on lamps to set a calming mood. Opt for warm white lightbulbs for a soft warm glow. A fire or something as simple as the flame of a candle are simple ways to add cozy vibes.
Scent
One of my favorite ways to make my home feel cozy or bring a bit of home when I’m traveling is through scent. I’ve always been someone who attaches memories to places or things and a scent is no exception. A favorite candle or diffusing essential oils can be a reminder of wonderful memories or set a relaxing mood. Whether it’s a blend to keep me alert and focused during the day, one to help me unwind in the evening or anything in between, I love them all.
Organic or living
Especially in the winter when everything outside seems dead and bare, greenery brings so much life to a space. Ferns, ZZ plants and snake plants are hard to kill yet easy to maintain. As a bonus, plants help to provide clean air by increasing oxygen and reducing carbon dioxide. Flowers from Trader Joe’s are another favorite; they’re inexpensive and last a couple weeks. A bowl of fresh fruit and vegetables is another thing you’ll always find in my kitchen.
Texture
Pillow covers and throw blankets are an easy and inexpensive way to change the look and feel of a room. In wintertime the texture of a chunky knit or warm velvet brings a cozy feel to a space. I especially love a chunky knit throw but the popular Barefoot Dreams throw is a new favorite. Store extra pillows in a woven basket or drape throws over the back of the sofa. Consider swapping bedding seasonally and adding a blanket at the foot of the bed for a cozy layered look.
