Spring Cleaning: 5 Things to Get Rid of Now

We made it; spring has officially sprung! The sun has returned, we’re enjoying longer days and looking forward to new adventures in the upcoming months. Before we launch into summer, it’s time to press the reset button and tackle the fallout from the last few months of human hibernation. Aside from a cathartic purge of unsightly clutter, here are 5 things to toss right now.

Unworn Clothes

If you haven’t worn something in the last 12-18 months, get rid of it! Spring is a great time to edit out winter clothing you didn’t wear the past couple of years before packing it away for next year. While you’re rotating your warm weather clothes to the front, try them on and edit out anything out that doesn’t fit or is looking worn.

Old Electronics

Raise your hand if you’ve got a drawer full of cords and you’ve got no idea what they go to? Unused devices and those pesky cords are just taking up space and causing confusion. Many screens and motherboards contain harmful chemicals so donate them or dispose of them at the proper recycling center.

Expired Items

Check expiration dates on condiments, pantry items, makeup, toiletries, vitamins and supplements. If you have an emergency kit with non-perishable food items and batteries, now is a good time to check that too.

Books

Sort through your favorite books and donate anything you’ve already read. It’s unlikely you’ll ever read those books again so pass them along to Little Free Library to trade them in for something new to enjoy.

Unnecessary Paperwork

If you have file drawers full of old paperwork, it’s time to get shredding. You’ll want to hang onto tax-related documents but most billing statements are available electronically these days. Electronic storage solutions like dropbox and google drive make it easy to scan, organize and store any hard copies you need to hang onto.
